Michael Callaghan and Thomas Callaghan Making it big in Disabled Darts

A DISABLED darts player's incredible journey has saw him compete in the final of the world championships.

Michael Callaghan travelled to the Netherlands for the world championships after a whirlwind first year in the disability game.

Michael, from Sutton Leach, has also qualified for the England team, who he will represent later in the year.

Michael is a standing disabled player, who has kyphoscoliosis, a back problem, and started playing for fun in his teens.

"I was in a wheelchair until I was about 13 and they got me walking," said Michael, now 48.

"From 14 or 15 years old I started playing, just messing about because my mum and dad played darts. I didn't start in the leagues in St Helens until I was about 21.

"It has been my first year playing disability darts. Over the last six or eight months I have done well enough."

His world championship campaign started off against holder Michael Davies and saw his run go all the way to the final, He eventually went down 3-1 to South Korean Kwanghee Cho in the game which was live on YouTube and Winmau TV.

Highlights of Michael's year have included winning the WDDA England Darts Masters, defeating Andy Quinn in the final. Michael also triumphed in the Chester Rileys Disability League.

It has also been a bit of a family affair, with son Tom also a player and Michael finished runner-up to the 19-year-old in the Malta Open Disability Singles.Tom has also recently been picked to represent Compris England A Team.
